The lands of the Kingdom... were a green paradise millions of years ago!

With pride and honor, we celebrate today a historic scientific discovery announced by the Heritage Commission , which inscribes the name of Saudi Arabia in the record of ancient natural civilizations.

A global study published in the prestigious scientific journal Nature (click here to read the study ) revealed that the lands of Saudi Arabia, which we know today as vast deserts, were a green paradise approximately 8 million years ago! 🌍✨

Imagine!

Rivers flowed, lakes spread, and green meadows flourished in the heart of the Arabian Peninsula, and our region became a natural corridor for living organisms between Africa and Asia.

Scientific discovery in brief:

  • The study revealed recurring periods of humidity that swept across the Kingdom's lands during the past 8 million years.
  • These wet periods used to cover the kingdom with rain, turning it into an ecological corridor rich in wildlife such as crocodiles, hippos, and elephants.
  • The evidence was found within cave formations in the center of the kingdom, through the analysis of rock formations (stalactite and stalagmite) that are millions of years old.
  • These results prove that the climate of the Arabian Peninsula naturally changed between wet and dry periods over time.

The Green Arabian Peninsula Project:

This discovery came as part of the #Green_Arabian_Peninsula project, led by Saudi and international scientists to map out the features of our natural past.

Through this project, we discover that the Kingdom was a cultural and natural crossroads for migratory organisms between continents, giving it a pivotal role in the history of global biodiversity.
